Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Madera County Superintendent of Schools employs teachers who are fully credentialed to teach the deaf/hard of hearing and follow a “total communication philosophy.”  They are assisted by instructional assistants and interpreters, as well as other support staff who are determined by an individual student’s needs, which include:

  • Speech/Language Pathologist
  • Audiologist
  • Adapted Physical Education Specialist
  • School Psychologist
  • School Nurse
  • Teacher of the Visually Impaired
  • Community Agency personnel as needed
  • Occupational Therapist

Services provided include:

  • Collaboration with parents
  • Assessments
  • Educational planning
  • Direct instruction and monitoring of student progress as specified by the child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Access to auditory trainers
  • Access to closed caption decoders
  • Audiological consultations
  • Sign language interpretation
  • Assistive Technology

Services are provided at the following locations depending on age and grade:

  • Millview School
  • Howard Educational Center
  • Madera High School
