Madera County Office of Education After School Programs

In California, the increase of after school programs and funding for these programs came about when lawmakers saw a relationship between youth crime, victimization and the time of day. Research has demonstrated that high risk behavior among youth occurs primarily between school release and early evening hours, when youth have no adult supervision. In an attempt to reduce such occurrences, after school funding was made available in the form of grants. The mandate for these programs is to provide a safe, structured environment where young people can experience enriched learning opportunities after school, from school release until 6 p.m. – thus supporting parent work hours and making it easier for parents to meet work demands.
Because of these grant opportunities, Madera County Office of Education (MCOE) was able to fund a total of 28 K-8, after school programs in Madera County known as Club YES. MCOE also funds two high school,
after school programs known as K.E.Y. Visions. For over a decade, MCOE has been able to extend learning for students after school on a daily basis as well as provide a safe environment for students to explore enriched learning activities. In Madera County, we have been able to document that when students are constructively engaged during the after school hours, juvenile crime drops, students experience academic improvement and the entire community benefits.
